Bone Densitometry
The bone densitometer (DXA)
is a fast and precise way to measure bone
mineral content and density of specific bone
sites (mainly the hip and spine) that are
most susceptible to fracture due to osteoporosis
and other degenerative bone diseases.
The bone density scan also evaluates measurement
of height and weight, a thorough history,
and risk assessment. Bone Mineral Density
(BMD) is calculated and compared to normal
BMD values, matched for age and sex, to confirm
or exclude low bone mass.
Bone density testing is fast and painless.
It requires no injections or invasive procedures
Indications for Bone
Density Testing
- All postmenopausal women under age 65
who have one or more additional risk factors
for osteoporosis (besides menopause).
- All women age 65 and older regardless
of additional risk factors.
- Postmenopausal women who present with
fractures (to confirm diagnosis of osteoporosis
and determine disease severity).
- Women who are considering therapy for
osteoporosis, if bone mineral density
testing would facilitate the decision.
- Women who have been on hormone replacement
therapy for prolonged periods.
